The Story Behind the Run

This run is being organized in honor of our dear friend, Susan Zabransky Hughes, who succumbed to cervical cancer in July of 2011 at the age of 46. Many of the women joining together to organize this run met Sue through the Wandell Elementary School in Saddle River. Our children attended Wandell from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade where Sue volunteered her time and was involved in many committees. We all were touched by Sue in so many ways. Whether it was sharing her love of cooking, training at the gym, hiking at the Reservation, or vacationing, Sue just loved life and lived it to the fullest every day.
Sue had many passions in her life, and running was one of them. We have vivid memories of waving to Sue on the street in her quest for running the NYC Marathon…three times! A compassionate woman, Sue ran the NYC Marathon in 2006 to raise money benefitting cancer patients. In trying to decide the best way to keep Sue’s spirit alive while simultaneously raising money to fund Susan’s Suite at HackensackUMC, we decided to organize a 5k run/walk in Saddle River. We thought it fitting that the course includes some of the same streets Sue ran on, and the neighborhood where she lived for 15 years while raising her family. As an additional tribute, the course reaches into Upper Saddle River where she grew up and where her parents still reside.
We invite you to join with us in honoring Sue by participating in the run, becoming a sponsor and/or making a donation. Thank you for your generosity and support!
