6th Annual Susan Zabransky Hughes
Saturday, April 29, 2017
On April 29, the 6th Annual Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run was held in memory of the Saddle River resident who lost her battle with cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46.
The race began at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with a USATF certified 5K run/walk hosted by Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and the Run for Sue Committee. More than 600 runners participated in this year’s run, which raised in excess of $170,000.
The Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and the Run for Sue Committee continue to fund a memorial scholarship by helping to support the education of a promising student at the Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a scholar in our inaugural class of 2018 – who reflects Sue’s qualities: dedicated, loving and committed to excellence.
Funding also continues for two weeks of camp at Pony Power Therapies in Mahwah for patients treated at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center. This equine therapy program offers pediatric patients and related families opportunities to engage in activities related to horses and the farm.
Since its inception in 2012, the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run, including gifts from the Hughes and Zabransky families has raised more than $2 million. Funds from previous years have benefited Susan’s Suite- a 10-bed oncology suite in our renovated Emergency and Trauma Center at Hackensack University Medical Center and established the position of Oncology Patient Navigator- ensuring a smooth transition of care.
The Story Behind the Run
This run is being organized in honor of our dear friend, Susan Zabransky Hughes, who succumbed to cervical cancer in July of 2011 at the age of 46. Many of the women joining together to organize this run met Sue through the Wandell Elementary School in Saddle River. Our children attended Wandell from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade where Sue volunteered her time and was involved in many committees. We all were touched by Sue in so many ways. Whether it was sharing her love of cooking, training at the gym, hiking at the Reservation, or vacationing, Sue just loved life and lived it to the fullest every day.
Sue had many passions in her life, and running was one of them. We have vivid memories of waving to Sue on the street in her quest for running the NYC Marathon…three times! A compassionate woman, Sue ran the NYC Marathon in 2006 to raise money benefitting cancer patients. In trying to decide the best way to keep Sue’s spirit alive while simultaneously raising money to fund Susan’s Suite at Hackensack University Medical Center, we decided to organize a 5K Run/Walk in Saddle River. We thought it fitting that the course include some of the same streets Sue ran on, and the neighborhood where she lived for 15 years while raising her family. As an additional tribute, the course reaches into Upper Saddle River where she grew up.
We invite you to join us in honoring Sue by making a donation to the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run/Walk. Thank you for your generosity and support!
